With an endless selection of skin care products available on the market, it’s understandably nerve-wracking to find the right products to develop a skin care routine suitable for your skin. No two skins are the same and no skincare routine is universal, so the routine you pick should definitely be one that’s suited for your skin type. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you take the guesswork out of the equation and devise an easy and personalised routine.

First off, get to know your skin

The process of building a personalised skin care routine begins with recognising your individual skin type and having a radiant and glowing complexion as the desired outcome, as you’d want your skin to benefit from it and not leave your skin high and dry.

While some skin care products do wonders for your skin, using them in an incorrect sequence or inappropriate regime may end up irritating and agonising your skin.

Here are the four commonly known skin types, as categorised by the cosmetic industry:

  • Normal skin: You have a balanced complexion and your skin appears refined with little to no blemishes. Acne and sensitivity concerns are a rarity to you. To sum it up, this is the skin type we all dream to achieve.
  • Oily skin: Your skin is no stranger to congestion and acne, appears shiny and feels oily throughout the day. While the cause for oily skin can mainly be attributed to genetics, ample hydration of the skin (go for non-comedogenic products!) can keep your sebum production levels in check.
  • Dry skin/Sensitive skin: Your skin appears rough and flaky, and you may find some products to be particularly stinging to your skin. This is due to the skin’s damaged moisture barrier which impedes its ability to lock in moisture, causing your skin to be especially sensitive and more easily inflamed.
  • Combination skin: You would often experience your skin to be oily in some areas, such as the T-zone and dry at the others. Instead of having two different routines for your skin, it may be more useful to find one that consists of different products to target a variety of skin issues.

Hey, keep it clean!

Proper cleansing is the first step and foundation of an effective skincare routine. It’s also probably the most important one of all – as this step sets up your skin for the rest of the steps and products that follow after.

Look for an alcohol-free, gentle cleanser that doesn’t contain strip your skin of its natural oils and dry out your skin. Gently wash your skin, then rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water as it removes the natural oils from your face faster.

Porcelain Recommends: Revive, Makeup Cleanser

The Revive, Makeup Cleanser is an oil-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free cleanser, which also doubles as a pre-cleanser. Invigorate and awaken your skin by gently massaging the Revive, Makeup Cleanser into your skin, as it melts away impurities and dissolves makeup. The antioxidant-rich Orchid extract nourishes and regulates pigmentation while the Horse Chestnut extract purifies and prevents further ageing of the skin.

Remove dead skin cells

Exfoliation helps keep your skin clear and more even as it gets rid of flaky skin cells. Look for chemical exfoliants as they do a better job of dissolving dead skin cells without irritating or damaging the skin. The exfoliator should be applied to damp skin in a gentle, circular motion. And remember: don’t scrub! Scrubbing only aggravates the skin and exacerbates any existing skin issues.

Porcelain Recommends: Revive, Natural Skin Refiner

skinrefiner-sq_1024x1024The Revive, Natural Skin Refiner is a non-abrasive exfoliant, as it makes use of natural enzymes instead of harsh beads that may cause irritation to the skin. Containing a potent blend of aloe vera and natto extracts, the Natural Skin Refiner not only hydrates the skin but also gently clear congestions and refine pores without drying out your skin. Gently massage the Natural Skin Refiner in a circular motion to boost micro-circulation and allow its natural enzymes to soften dead skin cells.

Toned and ready

One of the most important parts of the daily skin care routine, the toner balances the skin after cleansing, calms the skin and lowers the skins’ pH level, preparing it for any serums that follow. The toner also removes any excess oil your cleanser may have missed, and it shrinks the size of your pores.

Porcelain Recommends: Revive, Glycolic Toner

glycolic-sq_1024x1024An alcohol-free toner formulated with glycolic acid and lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, the Revive, Glycolic Acid Toner removes excess sebum, impurities and dead skin cells, to clarify the skin to make way for a brighter, clearer complexion. After cleansing and exfoliation, apply on a cotton pad and gently swipe on your skin. The best part of it all: it doesn’t dry out your skin!

Hydration is key

After cleansing, exfoliating and toning your face, it’s time to moisturise your skin. Moisturising is an essential step for your skin as it prevents dryness, flakiness, acne and wrinkles. Don’t skip this step if you’re looking for younger looking skin, as fine lines and wrinkles smooth out when our skin remains hydrated.

Porcelain Recommends: Balance, Hydraclear Gel

hydraclear_gel-01_1024x1024After cleansing and toning, apply the Hydraclear Gel with a gentle tapping motion to massage into skin. This clear and lightweight gel works hard to keep acne, inflammation, bacteria and excess sebum at bay while keeping your skin moisturised and pH levels balanced.

Most of us associate the term “pH” with Chemistry classes, our memories flitting back to days in the lab playing with the changing colors of liquids in a variety of beakers.

In fact, the extent of our knowledge regarding the word “pH” stopped at understanding that it stood for “potential hydrogen”, and that it was used to describe just how acidic or alkaline a product was: the most acidic measuring at a 1, and the most alkaline at a 14, whilst 7 was neutral.

Never did we realize or anticipate the importance of its role in the functioning of our bodies and our skin’s health. When we consume unhealthy food or use incompatible products, our deteriorating complexion is normally the first sign we get that our skin’s pH levels are imbalanced.

What is the perfect pH to achieve for our skin, then, you might ask?

Our skin’s barrier, also known as the acid mantle, works best at a slightly acidic 5.5pH balance. When it is at that ideal level, the skin is able to keep in the “good oils” and moisture excellently, whilst keeping out UV rays, pollution, toxins and bacteria.

However, when the pH leans too much to the alkaline side, our skin becomes dry and sensitive, occasionally resulting in flaking or eczema. Irritations can also strike during this period, which slows down the skin’s ability to ward off enzymes that can destroy collagen, thereby causing wrinkles and sagging.

It is rarer for the skin to be overly acidic; however, when it happens, the result is enlarged pores, blackheads, and acne.

Thus, equalizing the skin is truly of utmost importance. Do not worry though, because that balance is easily attained with a healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and at least 8 cups of water a day. Needless to say, having a reliable skincare regimen that works well is also necessary.

Often times, many tend to run for the hills the moment they hear “skincare regimen” as they assume that a dependable skincare product will end up costing an arm and a leg. This does not have to be the case. In fact, a simple 4 step (cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer) system is more than sufficient.

First, begin with a mild, or pH 5.5, cleanser so as to ensure skin is cleansed gently but effectively. Avoid using soaps which lean to the alkaline side and do not over wash your skin as water has a pH level of 7. Follow through with an alcohol-free toner so as to maintain the acid balance as well.

Including a serum may be an extraneous step for some but using one such as our Balance, Sebum Control Essence (R.P. $41) will, in fact, be tremendously beneficial. It not only hydrates skin and controls oil in the short run, it also slowly but surely balances out the skin in the long run. After a few months of usage, one should already experience a smoother, softer and more balanced skin texture.

All that is needed is a hydrating moisturizer as a finishing touch, so that skin remains constantly moisturized and is able to repair itself against aggressions over the day.

By following through with these steps, achieving that balance will be a breeze.

You don’t have to live at the spa, spend money on expensive branded products, or change everything about your beauty routine in order to have an acne-free and a healthy glowing complexion. One cannot simply rely on these few methods and hope for a miraculous improvement. There are many factors at play when it comes to skincare, and people often overlook the most fundamental ones.

Today, we explore 4 simple daily things that everyone can do to achieve perfect skin. Though they may seem extremely minute in the grand scheme of things, one should always remember that a mountain can only be moved by shifting the tiniest stones first!

 Change Pillowcases Every 2-3 Days

The most innocuous object at home might most probably be the guiltiest. To the majority, our pillowcases seem hygienic because we only lie on them right before we sleep. Many forget that pillowcases are exposed to dust and pollution particles in the air whilst we are out of the house.

Pillowcases do house dirt, and the oil that builds on our face as we sleep overnight does seep into the sheets as well.

Thus, it would be wise to launder or change pillowcases every 2 to 3 days so as to lessen the likelihood of clogged pores and blemishes. Another option is to switch to silk or satin pillowcases which are gentler on skin in the long run too.

Cutting out Fried Food and Dairy from Diet

Many are aware that fried food is bad for health, but find themselves unable to stay away from it. The same applies to dairy because of its ubiquitous presence in our food and drinks. Those of us who love fried chicken, cheese and milk tea thereby become the most likely victims of acne.

It may be difficult to place such complete dietary restrictions on ourselves, so the simplest way is to take it a step at a time.

Instead of drinking milk or milk tea and coffee, one can change to green or brown rice teas which taste equally good but are healthier. Fried chicken can also be replaced with a grilled version. There is a plethora of vegan options out there that taste just as good as dairy products that can be explored too.

Washing Hands before Touching the Face

Touching our faces seems so natural to many of us. When we think, we touch our chin. When we are tired, we rest our faces in our hands.

Unfortunately, this just breeds more bacteria under our skin as our hands are often dirty. We must always remember to wash our hands with a good soap before touching our skin.

The best solution, of course, is to not touch our face at all unless we are washing it or applying skincare. This rule might be difficult to those who like to pick at their pimples especially, but it can make the biggest difference.

Be Wary when Trying Fad Products

People with healthy, immaculate skin know that the right routine matters more than the latest hot product.  If it sounds too good to be true or fails the common sense test, it probably won’t work. We advise you to save your money for products that work: moisturizers, sun protection and serums that have been proven to bust that acne bacteria or eliminate wrinkles and get rid of dead skin cells. Do think in terms of the climate and environment you live in and always seek advice from a beauty professional.

When seeking the opinion of a beauty professional, be on the lookout for:

  • verifying the source of the expert opinion
  • misleading credentials
  • brands that don’t understand the chemistry behind their ingredients or don’t really know the way skin works
  • overstating results and exaggerated promises
  • evasive answers to direct questions
  • unanswered emails and calls requesting more information
