Porcelain's Intensive - HA+ Hydrating Serum is powerpacked with 4 complexes: Deep Moisture, Anti-Ageing, Sensitive, and Anti-Acne

There, we’ve said it. The HA+ Hydrating Serum is the first of Porcelain’s new Intensive line of products, and we made it for the clients who inspired us to curate amazing ingredients into four specific complexes. Four, to help clients from all walks of life enjoy a hydrating serum that would be suitable for any skin type, any age, and any climate. But it took two years before we were ready to unveil it to the world.

The serum was first launched internally — as with any other product we have to ensure it works – before being sold in-store. Like Pauline said during our media launch just the 3rd of May, we run a tight ship with our products.

“Does this product deserve a space on your shelf?”

We took two years to be able to say, hell yeah!

So here’s the story we wanted to share that we feel is more important than any blow-by-blow sales talk. Because hey, you can read that here. Instead, let’s talk about the story behind the HA+ Hydrating Serum.

And that’s really our clients’ stories that we’re sharing. Every day, our clients talk to us. It goes beyond “How’s your day?” – beyond skin deep. Many tell us they have oily skin (but they’re really just dehydrated). A few struggle with how to properly moisturize dry skin.  The ultimate question that triggers our brainstorming frenzy:

“I can’t find anything out there that works for me; do you have a solution?”

The truth is, there are many incredible products out there with great anti-ageing benefits, or hydration, or acne control. And that was when it hit us – the keyword is “or”. There is a plethora of products in the market that specifically focus on just one or two main skin concerns. For example, there are many rich creams. Plenty that contain hyaluronic acid. Even more with ingredients that help boost collagen levels… But how many anti-ageing products had more benefits than just plumping up wrinkles? How many could be used by certain people that provide the benchmark of it being suitable for anyone and everyone – people with sensitive or even acneic skin?

Porcelain's Intensive - HA+ Hydrating Serum is designed for anyone at any stage of their anti-ageing regime

“What gap are we trying to fill here?”

With that, out popped our latest flagship product, the HA+ Hydrating Serum – specially designed not just for anti-ageing and hydration, but also to combat acne (with good bacteria) and soothe and even heal sensitive skin. A product to fill out all that the “Ors” couldn’t – to fill the gap that our clients helped us realize was there.

To you.

The mid-day sheen on my face was the bane of my existence, before I joined the Porcelain team. The oil made me look that much more unprofessional before the final interview, less attractive before the important date, less… me. That said, I’ve since learnt to be more confident in my own skin (literally and figuratively), and I’ve also learnt why my forehead’s constantly shiny when my skin’s supposedly dehydrated (not dry)!

I’ve also learnt that my guilty pleasure of washing my face to get rid of the oil and gunk in the middle of the day is completely okay – amongst other things. So here’s answering a question we got on our latest #DearPauline column with MTV VJ Hanli Hoefer:

Would you recommend a mid-day facial cleanse for a person whose job requires extended physical activity throughout the day?

– @gadfitsgp

The answer is yes – just do it the right way.

TIP 1. MID-DAY CLEANSING:
THE ONE THAT MOST THINK MIGHT BE WRONG, BUT IS ALRIGHT

It’s not really a matter of when, but how you wash your face. Use a hydrating, sulphate-free cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural moisture. This helps refresh your skin while replenishing it with moisture, so it’s less likely to think it’s too dehydrated and produce oil as a result. Go on with that mid-day cleanse, now!

TIP 2. TONING & MOISTURISING RIGHT AFTER:
THE ONE THAT MOST MISS OUT, BUT SHOULDN’T:

After the mid-day wash, remember to reapply your moisturiser and sunscreen afterwards. You’d done it once in the morning, so there’s no reason to skip it now. You’d washed off not just the oil, but the moisturizer and sun protection you previously had on as well. It’s not okay to miss out on this step.

Opt for an alcohol-free, moisturizing emollient that contains natural oils like jojoba or rose. Alcohol dries the skin – and we know what happens then…

TIP 3. BLOTTING:
THE ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DO, BUT ISN’T OKAY

Credits: Into the Gloss

We’re all guilty of this one. Blotters look really gross after they’ve been on our faces, but the more saturated they are with oil, the deeper the pleasure it secretly gives us. But that’s just one more thing I’ve learned. Blotters take away the oil but to compensate for that, your skin starts pumping out more. Often, this leads to clogged pores and acne – the very things we were trying to avoid. Powdered blotters are even more criminal because the powder not only clogs pores, but pushes the dirt and excess oil deeper in.

Blotters are marketed as a quick-fix, and while they’ll give you 5 minutes of gratification, they don’t help to fix the real root of the issue. What you need is to regulate your sebum and pH levels, which are processes that happen beneath the skin’s surface.

Instead, help yourself to that mid-day cleanse. Just remember Tips 1 & 2 to make sure you’re helping, rather than harming, your skin!

Stay True,

If this is new to you, trust me – I was surprised to learn this too! Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things, and you could worsen the issue if you don’t use the right products (and treatments) to remedy it. Let’s have a quick definition breakdown first:

Dry skin is a skin type that doesn’t produce much oil (also known as sebum)
Dehydrated skin is a skin condition where your skin lacks water

Now, here are some fuss-free takeaways with added care tips!

  1. YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH OILY AND DRY SKIN.

You cannot have both oily and dry skin.

Simply put, you have oily skin when your skin produces oil (you don’t say)! On the flipside, dry skin doesn’t (not enough, anyway). Your skin can be oily and dehydrated, but never oily and dry. Therefore, many people with seemingly oily skin don’t realize it’s dehydrated — not dry. They then mistakenly use products with higher oil content, but what they need are water-based products to boost hydration. On to the next point!

  1. DRY SKIN AND DEHYDRATED SKIN REQUIRE DIFFERENT SKINCARE PRODUCTS.

Dry skin and dehydrated skin require different skincare products.

Because dry skin doesn’t produce (much) oil, that’s exactly what it needs. As counterintuitive as it sounds, the skin needs oil to retain water! A good analogy to understand this? Take leather for example: you need to frequently condition it with oil to maintain it. On the contrary, when you add water to it, it usually just cracks after some time. Why is this? That’s because, in the absence of oil, the water rapidly evaporates… and takes away the existing water with it too. It’s really the same for your skin, so opt for moisturizers that have higher oil / cream content instead, to help lock water in.

And while dehydrated skin does produce oil, it lacks water. Sometimes, this lack of hydration is the culprit of excess oiliness. The solution is to use gentle, water-based products (not oil-based ones!) to replenish hydration. Avoiding harsh products also helps reduce tightness in the skin.

  1. YOUR SKIN NEEDS A GOOD BALANCE OF OIL AND WATER.

Meaning, everyone needs a balance of moisture and hydration. Yes, that’s another mind-boggling fun fact: Moisture = Oil, and Hydration = Water! When these are in equilibrium, your skin will be naturally smooth, glowing, and radiant from within. That’s why our Balance – Sebum Control Essence is one of our star products (all our staff use this); it’s the very foundation of our #FoundationFreeConfidence (no pun intended)!

It feels like a Science class today, doesn’t it?

Till next time!

You may have experienced many late nights, days of travel and seemingly never-ending stress this festive season. These may have taken a toll on your skin and left it looking a little worse, post-holiday. With that said, what your skin needs right now is an extra boost of nourishment and moisturization. Start the new year looking your best and restore your skin back to its former glory!

1. GET SOME BEAUTY SLEEP

This is what most would consider “common-sense” but it is also the most overlooked step in regaining that glow. Your body renews and repairs while you sleep, which means sleep may be as close to a fountain of youth as you can get. Your skin gets visibly brighter and healthier-looking when you’re well-rested… and dull and tired if you’re, well, tired! Try to get enough zzz’s for 7 to 9 quality hours each night.

2. DETOX YOUR BODY, NATURALLY

It’s simple: DRINK WATER! Start your morning by drinking a tall glass of warm water with juice from half a lemon. Lemons hydrate your system and promote digestion, thus flushing out toxins and waste. Also, include plenty of fresh leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet. These contain plenty of antioxidants to not only revive your skin, but also provide a lots of fiber. Fiber helps to eliminate toxins and a lack of it means that these toxins get reabsorbed into the bloodstream. More health problems, anyone?

3. PAMPER YOUR SKIN WITH A FACIAL

Facials aren’t just a pampering treat; they are also key to healthy skin. To maintain a radiant healthy glow, try to fit in two facials a month (or one a week if you can). Here are some of our favourite facials to get your skin radiant and glowing in no time:

Restorative Facial

A luxurious and pampering treatment, this facial is designed to alleviate signs of stress and fatigue. This six-step bespoke programme helps reduce overall skin sensitivity and water retention, while improving hydration and overall skin tone and elasticity. Described by Her World Plus as a facial which “combines high-tech wizardy of pressurized jets of hyperbanic oxygen with the manual elbow grease of your therapist”, our Restorative Facial will leave you with luminous skin.

Sun Rescue

This treatment entails a three-pronged approach to Calm, Repair and Hydrate your skin. With the use of technology, the skin undergoes vasoconstriction and vasodilation, which stimulates microcirculation and encourages cell regeneration. As the name suggests, this facial targets sun-damaged skin. But that’s not all. This treatment absolutely does wonders for hypersensitive skin and dry skin individuals. It soothes irritated skin and provides anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits, suited for all skin types.

4. UPGRADE YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

If you’ve been out partying over the holiday season, your skin is most probably bogged down with dirt and grime. If you haven’t heard of double-cleansing, let this year be the year you do. Double cleansing involves two steps: The first step helps to remove makeup and also the more superficial layer of grime that accumulated throughout the day. The Revive, Makeup Cleanser is an oil-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free cleanser/pre-cleanser which gently melts away impurities and dissolves makeup, while regulating pigmentation and preventing the further ageing of your skin. The second step – which means using your preferred cleanser – provides a deeper cleanser for your pores clear any other remnants the first step might have missed. After cleansing, don’t forget to hydrate by using a moisturizer – more on how to hydrate your skin and the importance of it.

Running a really hectic schedule shopping for Christmas? Struggling to finish everything by that dreaded deadline before the festive season? You might be putting yourself (and your skin) through some serious stress right now, and you might have noticed duller skin on top of increased tension and fatigue.

Here are 10 tips on how to #GetYourGlowOn in time for Christmas and the New Year (and they pretty much revolve around hydration and oxygen)!

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Credit: Ethan Sykes (@e_sykes)

You probably already know that hydration is the key to better skin. Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to flush your skin back into plumpness, which helps to “fill in” wrinkles and pores for a smoother-looking complexion. Water can also help fight off breakouts as sebum levels on the skin are reduced when it’s sufficiently hydrated. It’s one of our guiding philosophies to have a good balance of water and oil on the skin in order to prevent acne breakouts and blemishes. Then again, drowning yourself in water at one go isn’t the solution. Moderation is key – hydrate yourself and give your skin a steady flow of water throughout the day, since your body can only take in so much water per hour.

If you aren’t the kind to drink your water, eat it! It’s even better to reach out for vegetables and fruits simply because they hydrate your body twice as effectively as a glass of water! Moreover, this water stays in your body longer, as opposed to the water that simply passes right through.

A final water tip? Water actually reaches all your other organs before reaching your skin, thus it’s important to give your skin water directly (and keep it there – another of our mantras!) as well by using suitable products. Apply a hydrating moisturiser as soon as you can after leaving the shower (especially if you’re the kind to take really hot showers, which actually dries out your skin – but more on that later). After showering, the skin is extra porous and thus can better absorb the water that you apply on it after.

2. Double Cleanse — Because Once Just Isn’t Enough

We’ve probably worn our clients down with Mantra #2: Always double cleanse.

The first cleansing step not only helps remove makeup, but also the more superficial layer of grime that accumulated throughout the day (so this applies to you too, guys). The second step essentially is a deeper cleanse for your pores before using a toner to clear any other remnants.

You might think it a hassle, but your skin will really thank you for it once you’ve worked this habit into your skincare regimen. After all, there really isn’t a point in slathering on the moisturisers if nothing is going in (worse, you might be further trapping dirt and increasing sebum production within): Double cleansing and toning only help to prep the skin to maximize absorption of nutrients from your serums and moisturisers afterwards.

3. Exfoliate!

Twice to thrice a week, use a gentle exfoliator to boost your skin’s job of clearing dead skin cells. Exfoliation also helps to boost microcirculation, so you experience brighter skin within minutes.

4. Moisturize your skin

Our tropical climate in Singapore largely calls for gel moisturisers rather than cream-based ones, but get your skin specialist to make suitable recommendations for your skin type. As we mentioned above, it’s not sufficient to drink or eat your water, especially if you’re gunning for a healthy, radiant glow this Christmas! Remember to moisturise every morning and night to speed up the process.

In the morning, spritz skin with a hydrating mist or spray for instant rejuvenation, followed by a lightweight water-based moisturiser and top with sunscreen. Nighttime calls for a little more intensive moisturisation, so consider using a deeply hydrating serum underneath the moisturiser for an added moisture boost for glowing skin.

5. Don’t Forget Your Lips, Neck and Décolletage

Remember to care for the rest of the area on and around your face as well as you care for your skin! It’s easy to neglect these areas, but your neck and décolletage develop wrinkles which tend to reveal more about your age than your face itself. Don’t forget to include all these areas in your skincare regimen, including cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising. Your lips also deserve some TLC to complete the entire healthy outlook!

6. Let Your Skin Breathe

Aside from Tip #1 (hydrate, hydrate, hydrate), this is also another really fast way for your skin to reboot into its healthy, radiant state – don’t wear foundation! It’s something most women find a challenge, but by skipping this step, you’re also feeding your skin with more oxygen without it having to go through all the layers of makeup, foundation, and whatnot.

Moreover, foundation and heavy makeup can cause congested skin – a shortcut to acne and dehydration thereafter. Unless you’re really conscientious about removing your makeup at the end of every day, we suggest skipping this step for awhile if you want glowing skin pronto for Christmas and the New Year.

Oxygenated blood is red, and deoxygenated blood is blue, right? Keep those cheeks flushed with oxygen, and you’ll naturally experience brighter skin.

We probably also shaved ten minutes off your morning routine before work for you – you’re welcome.

7. Never Leave Home Without SPF

Credit: Glen Jackson (@glenjjackson)

No matter the time of the day or night, never leave home without sunscreen.

Of all the benefits you get from this tip, this is probably the most convincing in your quest for Christmas-ready skin: It helps to prevent sunburns, skin discolorations, which means more even skin tone, which means a reduced need for foundation or concealer… refer back to Tip #6.

8. Book Some Facials

While you still have some time, clock in some hours at your facial spa to help boost results from your home skincare regimen. Your therapist has techniques and access to equipment that can revitalize your skin with greater efficacy.

What can professional facial spa services do? Good facial massages help stimulate microcirculation and lymphatic drainage to aid removal of pollutants in the skin. What you get afterwards is healthier and more radiant skin.

9. Shower Without the Heater On (If You Can)

We all enjoy really hot, steamy showers sometimes – especially when the rain’s making for a cold, cold day. But the heat actually isn’t doing our skin many favors in terms of hydration. If you’re able to, jump into the shower without the heater on!

10. Clock the Zs

Your skin and body naturally heals itself during sleep.

Sleep helps your body reverse everyday free radical damage via cellular renewal, which means you wake to better, brighter complexion (if you’ve rested enough and well). We won’t go too much into the science of it all but know that a good night’s rest can also stimulate the repair and regeneration of collagen-producing cells – so you’ll experience firmer skin.

If you suffer from restless nights and struggle to get some shut-eye, try using a sleep remedy, such as a silk sleeping eye mask to help you reach that stage of deep slumber.

And there you have it, our ten tips to #GetYourGlowOn for the festive season! You have just slightly more than a month to go – start treating that skin well!
