You could spend a bomb on anti-aging products but look terribly old if you don’t invest in the right eye skincare. With its skin being ten times thinner than the rest of your face, the eye area requires the most care. We discuss how to provide the right care for the most delicate part of your face.

Did you know?

The average human blinks around 10,000 times a day. Having this fragile skin overexert itself like that, it comes as no surprise that the first tell-tale signs of your age show up here. As you age, collagen and elastin production decelerate and the skin loses what supports its shape. This is when the skin sags, and fine lines (or laugh lines) appear around the eye.

To avoid this, most people run looking for the richest eye cream.

That, however, is a grave misconception. Thick formulas that are overly emollient on the skin around the eyes can cause milia seeds. (Read more about what milia seeds are here)  When the product is too thick to be quickly absorbed by the skin, it could cause clogging, thus leading to tiny seeds around the eye area. Instead, opt for lighter gels or serums that penetrate the skin quicker.

Overexposure to sunlight is also a major factor of aging around the eyes.

Therefore, be sure not to forget the SPF for your eye area! Caring for the skin around your eyes should start as early as 25, but it’s never too late to start.

Not having enough sleep every night?

Puffy eyes, unsightly dark eye rings and huge eye bags are your eyes form of protest. The blood vessels supplying oxygen and nutrients are smaller in thin skin, and therefore the skin under your eyes are more susceptible to the issues your body face.

Sun Rescue: Calm, Repair & Hydrate

This treatment entails a three-pronged approach to Calm, Repair and Hydrate your skin. The skin undergoes vasoconstriction and vasodilation, which stimulates microcirculation and cell regeneration.

Sun Rescue is a saviour — and not just for sun damaged skin

As the name suggests, the Sun Rescue targets sun-damaged skin. And that’s not all. This treatment absolutely does wonders for hypersensitive and dry skinned individuals. It soothes irritated skin and provides anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits. The best part? It’s suited for all skin types.

The treatment

The treatment first begins with a gentle double cleanse using our Revive, Makeup Cleanser and Soothe, Hydro Cleanser to remove surface impurities. As long as your skin isn’t sunburnt, the therapist then applies the Revive, Natural Skin Refiner to slough away dead skin.

Next, experience a chilling yet soothing sensation with our freeze therapy. The CryoProbe cools the skin down to -10 degrees. This helps firm, tone and restore radiance to your skin. The combination of CryoProbe and electrophoresis with aloe vera gel helps with blood circulation and cellular oxygenation. Furthermore, it enhances the penetration of the aloe vera gel up to 99% (Read about the reparative benefits our aloe gel brings here). In turn, this speeds up the skin’s healing process and builds its immunity.

The OxySpray infuses custom-blended serums and oxygen to hydrate and nourish the skin. After analysing your skin’s needs, your therapist will prepare a ginseng tonic, witch hazel or rosewater mix – depending on which best suits your skin. The mist feels light and refreshing and delivers incredible hydration and reparative effects. After the oxygen therapy, a custom-blended mask is applied on and left to rest on your skin.

To top off your treatment, the therapist performs a relaxing massage. The facial ends with moisture gel protectant and sunscreen to retain the facial’s benefits. All our products are non-comedogenic (they don’t clog pores!).

The end result

Experience instantly radiant skin, refined pores and a rejuvenated visage. Read what Nylon Singapore and Mefitted have to say about this facial!

Lobster-red, itchy and peeling skin. We know the aftermath of a good day of frolicking in the sun all too well. Yet, most of us never learn. For every minute you go unprotected in the sun, it adds to the debt you have to pay. (Read about what the sun actually does to you here) Well, the good news is, you can actually reverse some of this sun damage.

Sunburn is an inflammation caused by overexposure to UV radiation. After a sunburn, the skin temporarily loses its protective barrier, causing it to be susceptible to burns. The no-brainer solution is obviously to get out of the sun. But that’s easier said than done. Sun exposure is all around us, even on overcast days or indoors. Other than putting on sunblock diligently, wearing clothes with more coverage also helps in your skin’s recovery.

Caring for sun damage

The immediate care you give after the sunburn is most crucial. A severe sunburn in the early years of your life could engender skin problems such as pigmentation, early ageing or even skin cancer.

After a sunburn, cleanse the skin with cool water and slather on a generous amount of moisturizer. Pick moisturizers designed to lock in moisture and speed up the skin’s repair process. Aloe Vera is a great option as it has amazing healing properties. They also cool the skin immediately and create a protective barrier to prevent infections.

Foundation of Skin Care: SOS for Sun Damage - Aloe Recovery Gel

Enter the Soothe, Aloe Recovery Gel

The Soothe, Aloe Recovery Gel isn’t any ordinary moisturizer you’d find in drugstores. Consisting of 99% stabilized Aloe Vera Gel, this ultra-soothing gel heals and eases irritated, sun damaged skin. It also improves the skin’s moisture balance. Aside from shielding the skin from environmental aggressors, it also helps to build up its natural resilience.

The term “stabilized” means that the aloe gel has not been diluted with other substances. It’s thus a very concentrated form of Aloe Vera for your skin. Stabilization prevents oxidation and seals in aloe’s natural potency in its purest form.

It’s different from the others

While Aloe Vera Gel can be commonly found in the market, the ingredient make-up of the product makes a vast difference in the benefits it brings. (Tip: Look at the ingredient list. The first ingredient that appears has the highest composite in the product. The percentage composite decreases subsequently the later an ingredient appears)

Throughout your recovery process, ensure good sun care habits (Read more about sun prevention here). Do not pick at your peeling skin to avoid aggravation. Hydrate yourself with fruits and water to deliver moisture to your skin inside out.

In our previous post, we talked about the horrid things the sun does to your skin. (Check it out here) But when it comes to skin care, prevention is always better than cure. You might have heard that for the umpteenth time, but are you doing enough? Read on to find out.

Sunblock or Sunscreen?

Sun protection products are your best friends when it comes to fighting the sun, and understanding the different sunscreen functions is the first step to sun-proof skin. Sunblock, also known as physical sunscreen, acts as a shield against UV rays. It helps to reflect damaging UV rays as they hit the surface of your skin. Sunscreen, on the other hand, offers chemical protection by absorbing the UV rays at the surface layers of the skin. The UV rays are then released in a harmless form of energy, preventing them from damaging deeper layers of the skin. This is unlike sunblock, which blocks off all penetration. Find out more about the difference between sunblock and sunscreen here.

While sunblock is primarily formulated to shield off UVB rays, sunscreen takes care of the UVA rays. Therefore, choose broad-spectrum sunscreens for complete coverage. These sunscreens fuse the benefits of sunblock and sunscreen to block off both UVA and UVB rays.

SPF Explained

The Sun Protection Factor represents the duration you can stay out in sun without burning. Everyone has a period of time they can stay in the sun before their skin starts suffering from burns. Multiply this figure by the SPF, that’s the amount of time you can stay in the sun safely. So for example, if it takes your skin 20 minutes before burning, an SPF15 sunscreen will lengthen it to 5 hours.

“The higher the SPF, the more covered I am.”

False. In fact, a SPF15 is about all you need. A SPF15 sunscreen filters out 93% of the UV rays, while SPF30 hits a mere 4% higher of 97% coverage. What’s more, the percentage hike decreases as you go up. The point of SPF isn’t so much about the coverage you get, but the duration you can stay protected. Moral of the story – Reapply your sunscreen regularly.

Choosing the Right One for You

Due to its thick formula, sunscreens are often comedogenic products. (Learn about why you should opt for non-comedogenic products) This will lead to another series of skin headaches for you in the long run. Check out more tips on how to choose your sunscreen here.

Flawless Skin Perfecting Moisturizer To counter this concern, Porcelain’s Flawless, Skin Perfecting Moisturizer (SPF20) offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays while pledging to be non-comedogenic, oil free and paraben free. Now, you can slather on your sunscreen generously without worrying about clogged pores.

Everyone dreams of having flawless skin without having to cake on layers of thick, greasy foundation. Available in two different tints, our Skin Perfecting Moisturizer provides the perfect blemish coverage for you while remaining light on your skin. Top it off with a water-resistant sunblock if you are going for a dip in the water, and you are ready to be the envy of your friends!

Sun care practices

“Even miracles take a little time.”

We couldn’t agree more with Cinderella’s godmother. Your trusted sunscreen needs a good 20 minutes before it is absorbed in the skin and ready to combat the sun, so don’t forget to apply it before you leave the house. Throughout the day, your sunscreen wears off as you sweat, hence it is important to reapply it.

The 4.5-billion-year-old star shines its brightest between 11am to 4pm. Do try to stay in the shade or protect yourself by using umbrellas with UV protection during this period of the day. Also, hydrating yourself regularly will help you fight the sun from within. Read more about the sun and sun care tips here.

Moisturizing is good. Yes, we all know that. But do you know what actually happens in the skin when you moisturize? Let us break it down for you.

To begin, we have to understand how our skin works. There are three layers in our skin – the epidermis (surface layer), dermis (middle layer) and hypodermis (also known as the fatty layer). When moisture is supplied, it goes straight into the dermis then moves up to the epidermis. Dry surrounding air pulls out the moisture from the epidermis, causing the skin to dry and flake.

Generally, there are two ways a moisturizer works. One, it creates a protective barrier and keeps the moisture locked in. Two, it draws the moisture from the surroundings and lower layers and delivers it to the epidermis. An ideal moisturizer should play both roles. But the question is – what makes an ideal moisturizer?

One hot favourite to look out for in your moisturizing and anti-ageing products is Sodium Hyaluronate. Its low molecular size, coupled with its ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water, makes it capable of penetrating the skin effectively. Not only does it hydrate the skin, it also helps with moisture retention. With its small size, it can “ferry” in other good stuff in your moisturizer into the deeper layers of your skin, helping it to be absorbed quickly.

SCE BAL 2 (1)Sodium Hyaluronate is found naturally in the dermis of your skin. However, it depletes with age and that causes an old and saggy appearance. To combat this, the Balance, Sebum Control Essence contains of 50% Sodium Hyaluronate. This helps to replenish supply and deeply moisturize the skin. The esculin present retains collagen and elastin, achieving anti-ageing benefits.

Infused with Tea Tree Extract, our Balance – Sebum Control Essence provides a great solution for acne skin. This is done by regulating sebum excretion and maintaining the skin’s pH level. Tea Tree Extract is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to combat troubled skin. After applying the Balance Essence, top it off with a gel moisturizer to complete your regimen.

The key to moisturizing, however, does not lie with the moisturizer alone. Having a first-grade moisturizer, combined with a terrible skin care regimen, would do injustice to the product. Preserve your skin’s moisture bank by using non-drying products and replenish moisture in every step of your skin care routine. Well-hydrated skin can better battle environmental aggressors and bring about a youthful, radiant visage.
