Toners have been increasingly misunderstood in recent years. Some experts believe that toning needs to be done religiously every day. On the contrary, some rule them out as unnecessary chores and chuck them out of the window.

Toning: Back Then

Traditionally, toning served as a bridge between cleansing and moisturizing. Facial soaps often contained overly harsh ingredients, causing the skin to be stripped of its essential oils. Toning helped to eliminate the leftover impurities and balanced the skin’s pH. This gave a thorough cleanse, resulting in the smaller appearance of pores and deeper penetration of skin products.

Toning: Now

However, with modern well-formulated cleansers, many argue that toning is no longer necessary for your skin. To some extent, we agree. Giving toning a skip for a few days will not lead to immediately devastating effects. Therefore, instead of remaining as a post-cleansing ritual, toners took on a new role. Now, they don’t just give skin a final cleanse, but offers other skincare benefits. They now contain even more ingredients (e.g. antioxidants, vitamins, etc.) for even more benefits for your skin, e.g. brightening and hydration. Why say no to that?

Toning: I’ll Still Stand By You

While toners are not must-haves, they are definitely good to have. With that said, we cannot emphasise enough the importance of having a good toner. A poor toner is worse than having no toner at all. Therefore, for best results, invest in a good one that is suitable for your skin.

What makes a good toner?

Avoid all alcohol-based toners. A good toner should never dry your skin. Alcohol breaks down the skin’s natural barrier, making it vulnerable to external aggressors. This could irritate your skin and lead to dryness or excess sebum production.

Rather, look out for water-based toners infused with Aloe Vera, Sodium Hyaluronate or rosewater for soothing and rejuvenating effects. Ingredients such as Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil can help fight off blemishes and acne, bringing clearer skin. For anti-aging and exfoliating purposes, pick toners with mild levels of Glycolic Acid, AHAs and BHAs.

Other than making sure you choose a right toner, it’s important to apply it properly as well.

How do you tone?

How you apply the toner depends on why you are doing it.

For Cleansing: Use a cotton pad to lightly sweep away the impurities.

For Nourishment: Use clean hands to gently pat the toner into your skin. You wouldn’t want to waste all that goodness in a cotton pad.

After toning, let it dry for a minute before moving on to moisturizing.

SPF20Understanding Sunscreen

You’ve got your beach towel, the bikini body you’ve worked for all winter, and a cooler filled with snacks – you’re ready for the beach! But hold up! Did you remember your sunscreen?

During the summer months, the importance of sunscreen cannot be understated, as it helps keep ultraviolet rays – UVA and UVB – from damaging the skin. UVB is responsible for sunburn, while UVA has more long-term damaging effects, like wrinkling and premature aging.

If you’ve ever wondered what the SPF number on your sunscreen bottle means, it stands for Sun Protection Factor. These SPF ratings start at 2 and can reach as high as 70. They measure a sunscreen’s effect against UVB rays and the amount of time you can be in the sun before burning. If, for example, you burn after ten minutes of sun exposure without any sunscreen, an SPF of 15 will allow you to stay in the sun for up to 150 minutes without burning. So, the higher the SPF number, the more sunburn protection the sunscreen provides.

Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, regardless of whether or not sunburn occurs. According to the Melanoma Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point during their lifetime, which makes this the second most common cancer for women in their twenties.

And while SPF is indispensable during the summer, it’s equally important year-round. UV rays are just as harmful during the winter as they are in the summertime. If you spend days working indoors, know that UVA rays can penetrate window glass, which means you are exposed during your drive to work and even at your desk, if your office is filled with natural light. And though you might not think it, UV rays are especially harmful on snowy days, since the rays – and potential skin damage from the sun – are multiplied by the reflective nature of the snow.

Dangers of Over Sun-Exposure with No Sunscreen

Sunlight consists of ultraviolet (UV) rays, as well as related rays such as UVA, UVB, and UVC.

  • UVA rays are present throughout the day and are the most important cause of premature aging of the skin. In addition, UVA rays are responsible for photosensitivity reactions and also contribute to skin cancer.
  • UVB rays are most intense from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and are most responsible for sunburn and skin cancer development.
  • UVC rays are filtered by the ozone layer and do not reach the earth’s surface.

Increased exposure to UV radiation occurs nearer the equator, during summer months, at higher elevation and during peak daylight. Reflection from the snow, sand, and water increases exposure, a particularly important consideration for beach activities, skiing, swimming, and sailing. You can limit your dangerous exposure and help prevent burns and long-term damage by covering exposed areas when possible, wearing hats, and using the wide variety of sunscreens available in most stores and pharmacies.

When To Apply Sunscreen?

  • Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before being in the sun (for best results) so that it can be absorbed by the skin and less likely to wash off when you perspire.
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming or strenuous exercise.
  • Apply sunscreen often throughout the day if you work outdoors, and wear hats and protective clothing.

How to Apply Sunscreen?

  • Shake well before use to mix particles that might be clumped up in the container. Consider using the new spray-on or stick types of sunscreen.
  • Be sure to apply enough sunscreen. As a rule of thumb, use an ounce (a handful) to cover your entire body.
  • Use on all parts of your skin exposed to the sun, including the ears, back, shoulders, and the back of the knees and legs.
  • Apply thickly and thoroughly.
  • Be careful when applying sunscreen around the eyes.

What is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is a natural ingredient derived from sugar cane, though it is now often made synthetically.

It falls into a set of molecules known as AHAs, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids. There are five AHA’s: glycolic acid (sugar cane), lactic acid (milk), citric acid (oranges and lemons), malic acid (apples and pears) and tartaric acids (grapes).

Glycolic Acid is the most common alpha hydroxy acid, and it has a reputation of being one of the safest forms of alpha hydroxy acids.

Porcelain's Glycolic Toner contains glycolic acid

How Does It Work?

  • Glycolic acid works like tiny ‘pacmen’, eating away at the glue between cells:
  • It reacts with the top layer of skin, breaking it down by dissolving sebum and other substances that bind cells together
  • Sloughs off dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter, younger looking skin (more benefits below)

Why Does It Work So Well?

Glycolic acid is part of the group of active compounds known as AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids). Derived from sugar cane:

  • It has the smallest molecules in the group so is able to penetrate the skin deeply and easily, making it the most effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness etc
  • Chemical peels use a high percentage of this acid and can be very effective if done safely and properly.
  • An even better way to use it is with a lower percentage on a consistent basis – as this gives the same results as heavier peels but in a much safer, easier way (and often gives better results as the consistent application makes them cumulative)

Benefits of Glycolic Acid

  • Provides a remarkably even exfoliation of the skin
  • Releases and dissolves dead skin cells – clearing up blocked pores and blackheads
  • A very effective acne treatment – particularly deep blockages of dead skin cells and sebum that cause cystic acne
  • Reduces fine lines and signs of premature ageing by increasing cell turnover – meaning younger, healthier cells are now visible on the skin’s surface
  • Acne scars (and other scar lesions) respond well to consistent glycolic acid treatment
  • It minimizes the appearance of pores by keeping them clear and helping the surrounding cells to strengthen and regain elasticity

Stay True,
