Before we go on to tell you how to minimize your pore size, let us first answer the question of many – ‘Why do I have such large pores?!’

#1 People with oily skin tend to have large pores

When you have oily skin, it tends to produce excess sebum.  This results in more oil and dirt collected in your skin, making the pore swell and looking larger than usual.

This does not mean that people with normal and dry skin will not have to deal with the problem of large pores. Though people with normal or dry skin tend to have smaller pores than those with combination or oily skin, they are still susceptible to open or large pore problems.

#2 Your pore size tends to increase with age

As you get older, you skin starts to lose its elasticity, which can cause your pores to look bigger. The effects of environmental aggressors such as sun damage, also typically accumulates with age. Simply put, the older you get, the more likely you’ve been exposed to the sun for longer hours, which causes your skin to thicken and pore size to increase.

#3 Genetic predisposition

You may have large pores due to your genetic predisposition. As with many other things – height, intelligence, body size, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that your pore size could well be attributed to your genetic predisposition. It simply means if one or both of your parents have large pores, it’s likely that you might have gotten it from them.

#4 Hormonal changes

Women may observe larger pores due to menstruation, pregnancy or menopause. Larger pores are usually more noticeable around their nose and cheeks, and this condition may come and go as hormonal levels fluctuate, but as women age, the difficulty of reducing the pore size increases.

Enough said about the problems.

Here’s bringing to you our recommended solutions:

#1 Exfoliation

Without exfoliating your skin, the dirt and dead skin cells are likely to accumulate and cause you to have larger pores. During puberty, pores often enlarge to handle the increased oil output from sebaceous glands. Most enlarged pores appear at nose, chin, and forehead (the T-zone area) so you might want to concentrate your exfoliation on these affected areas.

Porcelain’s Revive – Natural Skin Refiner can help with that…

The Revive – Natural Skin Refiner is a gentle and non-abrasive exfoliator that is suitable for all skin types. It gets rid of dull skin, improving skin radiance and texture. This is specially formulated with natural enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells and stimulate cell renewal.

#2 Use a Pore Strip

Pore strips can come in quite handy in reducing your pore size. All you need to do is let it sit on your skin for around 10 to 15 minutes and peel it off once it dries up. Those who have tried it before might have observed tiny looking hairs stuck onto your strip. Here’s the good news – they are actually not hairs, they are the sebum and dead skin cells that were clogging your pores and contributing to the appearance of large and open pores. I’d highly recommend you to splash some cold water onto your face to close up the pores.

#3 Tone your skin

Using a toner is effective when it comes to minimizing your pores.  It may seem like a redundant step for many, but the functions of toners go far and wide, and one of which includes toning your skin, which helps to reduce your pore size.

Similarly from the Revive line, Porcelain’s Revive – Glycolic Toner contains AHAs and BHAs. Enriched with a unique blend of alpha-hydroxy acids and Vitamins C & E, it clarifies sluggish complexions and protects it against free radicals that cause signs of ageing. Infused with sea salt, witch-hazel, aloe vera and Sodium Hyaluronate, this toner also helps soothe inflammation, hydrates, and accelerate collagen and elastin production. Pore Size - Tone with Porcelain's Glycolic Toner to brighten and refine skin

Find yourself avoiding sleeveless cause of unsightly underarms? It is a common problem that many women faces, especially with excessive shaving over time, and a lack of care for your underarms.

To get rid of this problem, let us first get to the root of it and look at the common causes of dark underarms:

1. Shaving
When you shave with a razor, it results in stubbles which makes you look like you have dark underarms. Apart of that, shaving results in ingrown hair, which further worsens the appearance of dark armpits. Our recommendation is, try waxing or IPL hair removal instead.

2. Dead Skin Cells
Similar to our face, our underarms require exfoliation as well. You can scrub your underarms gently with loofahs or scrubs. Try to do it once or twice a week for best results 🙂

3. Excessive Use of Deodorants!
We understand the importance of deodorants, especially for hot climates which results in sweating and body odour that is a major turn off. However, many studies have found that the strong chemical ingredients used in some deodorants may lead to pigmentation and darker underarms. Our suggestion is, use deodorants designed for sensitive skin. They contain milder ingredients that will not be harmful to your underarm skin or cause unsightly pigmentation.

Other than switching to waxing or IPL hair removal, exfoliating regularly and opting for milder deodorants, we’re also sharing with you a few natural remedies you can use to get rid of darkened underarms:

1. Lemon Juice
Simply rub a slice of fresh lemon on the pigmented area. It’s quick and easy!

2. Vitamin E Oil
Apply some vitamin E oil on affected area. It helps to improve the smoothness of your underarm skin, making it look less rough and ‘dirty’.

3. Baking Soda!
Use baking soda to replace your deodorants! It is able to absorb extra moisture and help prevent body odour.

Remember to be diligent in your underarm care, and you’d be able to show them off comfortably and confidently!

Deep Pore Cleansing

Extraction is a traditional procedure that is performed using a metal loop extractor and a medical syringe needle. The process can be slightly uncomfortable, but it helps remove comedones, milia seeds, acne, pimple, black/whitehead and other impurities that clog up the surface of your skin.

This process must be performed by highly skilled aestheticians, as improper techniques may cause scarring or undesirable outcomes.

Cleansing Is Never Enough

The first step in our daily skin care regimen is cleansing. No doubt, it is very important! Cleansing away the dirt, oil, make up that lead to clogged pores and surface impurities is pivotal part of clean pores and a clear complexion. When your pores become clogged with excess sebum, dead skin cells, sweat and other environmental dirt, your face start developing blackheads, whiteheads and other forms of acne.

There are several benefits to pore extraction, most notably unclogging your pores which can lead to healthier-looking skin. Keeping your pores clean and clear can also help to prevent future acne breakouts as well as to keep your pores from looking larger than they are.

Extractions Vs Technology

Despite current advancement in cosmetic equipment and product technology, Porcelain has no intentions to do away with the traditional extraction method. According to our experience, it is proven that extraction is by far the most effective, albeit, tedious way of deep cleansing.

Without thorough extraction, the impurities in the pores will prevent any precious nutrients from serums/ampoules to be effectively penetrated into the skin. With clogged pores, the skin will look and feel rough, uneven and dull.

Extraction, The Key To Porcelain Skin

Director Therapist, Jenny Teng, who has had more than 17 years of experience under her belt as an aesthetician, explains, “Throughout my career, there is one core finding in my approach to effective skincare treatment, and that will be thorough deep cleansing of the skin using specific extraction techniques for different skin problems. It has been my mantra, and Porcelain’s mantra. With proper deep cleansing, nutrients from the products we use can penetrate much easily into the dermis and that is what makes Porcelain facials different.”

At Porcelain, nobody wears foundation; clients and staffs. No one has to cover up any flaws or imperfections. They advocate beauty from within and help clients achieve that with their solutions.

We are a premium skin care solution provider with an unpretentious and intimate touch one finds in a traditional facial salon. Porcelain is designed such that clients feel at home on our premise; they know they can trust our professionalism and our sincerity”, Pauline Ng (Managing Director) added.

When it comes to skincare, I love anything that involves hitting my kitchen and whipping up a beautifying DIY recipe. And with fall coming to a close, I’m trying to find any and every excuse to consume pumpkin. Sure, pumpkin lattes and pumpkin pies are lovely treats, but why not beautify from the outside in with pumpkin too!

DIY Pumpkin Cellulite Scrub

  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 4 tablespoons caffeinated coffee grounds
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Mix pumpkin, coffee grounds and coconut oil until blended. Standing in a bathtub to reduce mess, apply the mixture from hip to ankle, in circular motions. Leave on for 5 to 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

The Vitamin A in the pumpkin helps promote cell turnover, and both the caffeine and the granular grounds in the coffee help increase blood flow to reduce the appearance of cellulite while the coconut oil moisturizes. Pumpkin pulp, seeds and seed oil are often used in many beauty products since pumpkin is packed with Vitamin A and Matrix Metalloproteinase, stimulate cell turnover and boost collagen and elastin production!
