It’s that time of the year again! Every December, we seem to subconsciously compose ourselves into a state of reflection and resolutions. Today, we’ll be sharing the 5 dimensions of self-care – with quick action tips to guide you to come up with your own. Be empowered with a healthier relationship with yourself for the new year!
1. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION
Have you ever felt restless because you don’t seem to be doing enough thinking? We run the rat race most days, and it’s all about doing (then doing more). We rarely discipline ourselves to take some time to reflect, learn and grow. Whether it’s picking up a new skill or a new book to read, remember to keep your mind stimulated for your overall wellbeing and self-care!
Little Actions to Nurture the Intellectual Dimension of Self-Care:
- Writing in a journal
- Pick up a new recipe (or cooking, if you can’t cook!)
- Learn a new language
- Fix a puzzle
2. THE EMOTIONAL DIMENSION
I’m a firm believer that you can only love others as much as you love yourself. Emotions are something many people shy away from, but being in tune with your feelings often helps you develop healthy relationships with others.
Little Actions to Nurture the Emotional Dimension of Self-Care:
- Say positive affirmations
- Say no!
- Catch up with a friend
- Be thankful for one thing each day
- Write in a journal
3. THE SOCIAL DIMENSION
Even the most solitary of persons needs human connection. Whether deep or casual, each interaction fulfills our basic social need and creates a healthy environment for personal growth. Surround yourself with positive close friends and loved ones, so they can offer emotional support in times of low morale.
Little Actions to Nurture the Social Dimension of Self-Care:
- Catch up with a friend
- Join a club, e.g. book, pottery, leather-making
- Organize a family dinner
- Chat with a stranger on the train
- Chat with a dog?
4. THE PHYSICAL DIMENSION
Possibly the easiest of dimensions to understand, the physical one revolves around your physical form and needs. Listen to your body and treat it well; it will thank you with boosted energy levels and self-esteem.
Little Actions to Nurture the Physical Dimension of Self-Care:
- Hug someone
- Work out
- Eat healthily
- Soak in a hot tub
- Put on a face mask
- Clock the Zs!
- Play with your neighbour’s dog
- Laugh – really loud
5. THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION
You don’t have to be religious to discover or develop your spiritual dimension. Being spiritually aware simply means gaining awareness of and a connection with things beyond yourself, or the material dimension of life. It can even revolve around your values or beliefs – something that gives more meaning to life. For me, I experience this greatest when I’m with nature; how about you?

- Look up at the stars on a clear night
- Dance in the rain (but please don’t fall sick!)
- Attend a religious service
- Forgive yourself
- Forgive others
