As we move through different phases in life, one of the major changes we have to learn to deal with will be our skincare needs. These changes can take place over a week, a month or years. We have to understand that our skin transforms according to hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet, ageing etc. In this entry, we will be focusing on how to deal with skincare by age groups.

Skincare by Age Groups: For the 20s

This is a crucial phase to begin if you have yet to have the habit of developing good skin care routine. Generally in your twenties, gone were the days when you suffered from major breakouts. Now, the main objective is to prevent premature ageing and to treat any scars resulting from acne/pimples previously. For those with adult acne, it would be to focus on reducing sebum production and keeping the breakouts in check.

2) Use the right products to retain collagen and moisture. At mid-twenties, your skin will start to lose its ability to retain moisture.

6) Avoid rich products, such as cream-based products or those with high anti-ageing ingredients to prevent pores from clogging.

9) Quit smoking. Start exercising and change to a healthier diet — it is so much easier to do it when you are still young.

Skincare by Age Groups: For the 30s

At this stage, skin cell renewal would have decreased even more significantly. The loosening of collagen fibres and elastin would have caused the skin to lose its natural texture, tone and color. Your skin will develop wrinkles and light age spots a little more easily as its natural resistance has weakened.

Basically, you will have to continue doing all the steps above, and add the steps below.

2) Change your skin care products gradually to those with a higher anti-ageing concentration.

3) If wrinkles and pigmentation have already developed, you may begin to seek treatments such as LHE/IPL Light therapy to boost collagen production and reduce pigment colour.

4) If you have been caring for your skin since your 20s, the occurrence of wrinkles and pigmentation would be greatly reduced.

Skincare by Age Groups: For the 40s and above

The outer layer of your skin is now thicker and dries up even further.  With the loss of collagen and moisture, you will develop even deeper wrinkles. In addition, elastic fibres also start to lose its elasticity and thicken into clumps. Thus, your main aim here will be to minimize the loss of collagen, moisturize, fight dull and uneven complexion, prevent further photodamage.
