Recently on our Dear Pauline column, we got a couple of people asking how long they should be spending on their skincare routine. They have no time. They’re too busy. They’re too tired. They can’t be fussed! And I completely understand.

Fuss-free Skincare Routines: How Long is Enough?

I’m the laziest out there, really, but have recently switched out of my typical three-step skincare routine: Wash, tone, moisturize in 3 minutes, tops.

And I am a convert.

And honestly? It really doesn’t take much. 10 minutes are all you need. And if you’re really in a rush, 5 can work as well. It’s about the time you take, the products used, and then how they are used. But skincare has now become a form of winding down for me. Precious, slow me time.

But okay, I get that some of you like to always be. On. The. Go. Get. Things. Done. Onwards, you time-starved!

We’ve kicked off our first #DearPauline beauty column with some really good questions. For those of you who don’t yet know, we’re working together with WearOhWhere for this from now till June. It’s a very genuine effort to help those of you with skincare woes! We’d covered some on Porcelain Prologue before, so here are a few questions we have quick tips for!

My skin has been looking dull and tired lately. What’s the best way to get a glow and rejuvenate my skin? I’d love to know some handy tips and tricks!

This is a question we regularly get! We’d just finished a series of #GetYourGlowOn stories for Christmas last year, but there’s no reason you can’t apply these tips all year long. Read these handy entries for fresh, radiant skin.

Recently, my skin has gotten very easily irritated and reddish. Is there a way I can make them disappear as quickly as possible?

Two common skin concerns Asians face with our tropical climates are redness and sensitivity. There could be many factors like hormones, a change in climate, excessive laser / chemical peels, etc., but how do we fix it? Aloe Vera is an excellent option but be sure to find stabilised Aloe Vera in high concentrations for maximum benefits. You might also need to update your home-care regime — eliminate products that may contain Retinol (Retin-A), Glycolic Acid, and Sulphates. Last but not least, it’s best to hydrate skin with a non-comedogenic moisturizer.

The fastest fix would be to go for a facial!

Read more about sensitive skin here, and how our signature Sun Rescue treatment is a godsend for such cases. Another option would be Red LED with Oxygen Spray with a Hydrating Concoction. Consider our award-winning OxyRevive treatment.

Is it wise to make those “well known” DIY face masks? Can such masks make any difference at all to our faces?

That’s a relevant question which MTV VJ Hanli brought up as well in our February column!

Using natural ingredients requires proper preparation. There’s a risk of bacterial infection and, in worst-case scenarios, allergies. Professionally-prepared products have the hard work done for you. For example, 60 roses are needed to derive just one drop of rose oil. These then go through various processes to be “transformed” into molecules that the skin can readily absorb. We have treated a case of skin-burn caused by direct application of lemon juice, so we are extremely careful about doling out DIY advice. We reckon finding a skincare specialist whose advice you can trust might be a much better alternative!

We’ve gathered a few more questions and will be posting a dedicated entries over the next week or two. Stay tuned and in the meantime, keep the questions coming! You might walk away with an OxyReviveTM treatment (U.P. $212.93) and our Soothe – Deep Hydrating Lotion (U.P. $69)!

Are you a frequent traveller? Your favourite airline might be thanking you with miles but your skin might not be as grateful. When you’re jet-setting around the world for work, caring for your skin might feel like the lowest on your list of priorities. How should you care for your skin when you’re constantly on the go? A client recently asked us this, and we’re here to share the care for those of you who have the same question.

TIP #1: ON THE PLANE – PUT A MASK ON, BUT DON’T FALL ASLEEP

I’m a fan of this one. It really doesn’t matter if I look stupid on the plane ride there. I just need to look like I snuggled in at a plush bed the night before instead of having made a red-eye flight, right? Nobody has to know. On your flight to The Business Destination, slip on a deeply hydrating mask to help boost tired, dull-looking skin.

But don’t fall asleep with it! Keep it on for a max of 20 minutes, or osmosis will draw all the moisture back out of your skin into the mask when it’s paper dry.

TIP #2: BACK IN YOUR HOTEL: CLEANSE, NO MATTER HOW BUSY YOU ARE

Credits: Bustle

There really isn’t a quick fix for this. Double cleansing is one of the most fundamental, important steps in skincare so I’m sorry but – non-negotiable. In fact, I might be making your skincare regime work slightly harder for you. If you use make-up for work, use olive oil to gently remove it, and cleanse twice with our Revive – Makeup Cleanser if necessary. Follow up with your usual cleanser, toning, serums and moisturizers.

TIP #3: USE A CLAY MASK ON YOUR T-ZONE

If you suffer from combination skin, use a clay mask on your T-zone before applying a hydrating mask (try our Biocellulose Hydrocare Mask). Clay masks help draw out impurities without causing irritation and also decrease excess sebum production. Top this off with a super moisturizing mask to pump skin with hydration. When your skin is sufficiently moisturized, it’ll naturally look brighter, smoother, and healthier.

TIP #4: KEEP A HYDRATING MIST WITH YOU ON THE GO

When you’re always hustling, your skin is the first giveaway that you’re completely worn out. It’s handy to keep a facial mist with you for a quick pick-me-up in the middle of the day, or in between meetings. I love our Soothe – Deep Hydrating Lotion because aside from smelling like roses, its jojoba oils help lock moisture in my face (oil is needed to retain water in your skin)! Another appointment in 10 minutes? I’m there!

I’ve always wanted to have an Aunt Agony column and now we do – only ours is a beauty column! Entitled “Dear Pauline”, we will have it up on WearOhWhere for just 3 months and the first is up here! Like our #BareWithMe campaign, we collaborate with different women from all walks of life. Still centred on honest conversations, we stack up their beauty and skincare woes against our MD Pauline Ng’s skincare savvy / prowess / expertise. Can Pauline answer them all?

(Read our very first #BareWithMe story here if you haven’t yet done so!)

We had to do this first column ourselves, but we really want this to be all about you! After all, what’s a beauty column without answering our readers’ questions? You’ll have 2 more chances to throw us beauty and skincare questions you’ve always wondered about, and we’ll have them answered in the next post. So, read our first #DearPauline exchange with MTV VJ Hanli Hoeffer here, and leave us a comment below to share your woes! We promise to be honest.

And one last thing… #DearPauline isn’t going to be your typical beauty column where we answer only skincare woes. Our candid, open conversation goes beyond skin deep, as we take a deep dive into Hanli’s life as a teen, her definition of beauty, and how she really feels about being 1.75m tall… amongst other things. You might just find yourself struck by honest truths like

“Spend time in the nude more often, laugh at yourself when you can… and learn to let go of the things you can’t control.”

How can we not love this girl?

Read our first #DearPauline exchange with Hanli here!  And remember to pop us some questions (:
