Today, we seek to debunk some of the most obnoxious myths about skincare. For those who have believed some of these myths, it’s time to see the light!

Myth #1: Oily Food Causes Acne

Most people believe that oily foods cause breakouts. However, instead of Oil, the real culprit that we should be avoiding is Sugar. In recent years, some researchers found that the best way to have healthier skin is to eat in a manner that keeps your blood sugar steady.

Too much intake of sugary foods will trigger your body to make a burst of insulin and this disrupts the hormone balance in your body. So it is extremely important to regulate your consumption of sugary foods. 

 

Myth #2: The Higher the SPF, the Longer You Can Stay in the Sun

SPF is not an indication of how long you can stay under the protection of the sunscreen. It refers to the ability of the sunscreen to block Ultraviolet B Rays (there are other types of UV Rays).

Here’s a quick reference guide:

SPF 15 – Blocks 94% of UVB Rays

SPF 30 – Blocks 97% of UVB Rays

SPF 45 – Blocks 98% of UVB Rays

After that, it does not really make much of a difference. The real trick is to reapply it often (every 2 hours or so).

 

Myth #3: It’s Wiser to Pop Pimples to Get Rid of Pus

As good and right as it might seem, releasing the pus unprofessionally can cause more inflammation that can lead to scarring and spreading under the skin. That is also the reason why a few days after popping one, another one often appears.

It is best to leave the popping business to dermatologists and well-trained aestheticians. That will minimize the risk of scarring and spreading.

Myth #4: Everyone Eventually Outgrows Acne

Parents tend to tell their children to not worry about their acne problems because they will disappear after they grow up. Sure, time may heal, but sadly, it does not heal everything. You can blame this on hormones.

For men, their hormone levels tend to level out after puberty, so they can indeed outgrow acne. However, because women’s hormone levels fluctuate throughout their lifetime (thank you, period), the same, sadly, cannot be said.

 

Myth #5: You can Get Rid of Cellulite

Truth be told: even Liposuction cannot entirely get rid of Cellulite.

Most treatments and creams can only minimize the look of Cellulite (the dimpled effect) by ironing out fat cells. However, the effect mostly lasts for at best, a few months.

The best advice would be to exercise often and regularly. Everyday energizing movements and skin warming exercises will help prevent the formation of Cellulite.

 

Myth #6: The Tingling Sensation Means that the Product Works

No, this tingling sensation should not be confused with the one you get from love.

In fact, it is your skin telling you to abort mission! It is your skin responding to irritation, resulting in inflammation. Products that produce this sensation can even damage your skin’s healing process.

Make sure to check if the product contains any possible skin allergens, and if the tingling sensation does not die down after a while, pay a visit to your doctor/dermatologist!

 

Myth #7: There is no Need for Sunscreen on a Cloudy Day

This is probably the most common myth today. But get this: unless there is a rare occurrence of a solar eclipse, UV Radiation from the Sun is always prevalent. So even on a cloudy day, UV Rays do indeed reach the Earth’s surface.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you apply sunscreen everyday, regardless of weather conditions. Do remember to reapply it for best results!

As little as “pH” may seem, these 2 letters in the alphabet are probably more important than you and I both realize. pH Balance acts both as a culprit and a form of salvation for most skin problems. Let us now understand why.

What is pH Balance?

 

pH”  stands for “potential hydrogen” and it measures the acidity of substances. Similar to high school Chemistry concepts, a pH value from 0-7 is classified as “acidic”, while anything from 7-14 is classified as “alkaline”. Pure water has a neutral pH level of 7, meaning it has the same amount of acids and alkalis, which balance each other out.

Let us first understand the biology of our skin.

Our skin is made up of 3 main layers – epidermis, dermis and the subcutaneous fat layer. Beneath these skin layers lie our oil and sweat glands.

The oil and sweat glands embedded in our skin contribute to our skin’s pH level – which is approximately 5.5, making it slightly acidic.

When our skin is too acidic, it will cause inflammation and be more susceptible to bacteria infection. When our skin is too alkaline, it will become very dry and thus, age faster.

Therefore, the trick to healthy skin lies in ensuring that your skin’s pH is balanced at 5.5.

What Happens When Our Skin’s pH Level is Imbalanced?

As mentioned, our skin’s pH level is approximately 5.5. But what happens when the pH levels start to vary?

Well, many undesirable things can happen. Instead of listing down all the possible scenarios, here is what generally happens:

Once our skin’s pH level is imbalanced, the oil and sweat glands will start to detoxify by pushing impurities out from the bottom layers. In fact, most skin conditions such as acne and eczema always start from the deepest layers, which is why everything actually boils down to our skin’s pH level.

How Do We Prevent This? 

As horrifying as it sounds, with every cloud there is a silver lining. Here is how you can prevent your skin’s pH level from varying too much: 

Know your skin’s pH level

Everyone’s a little different. In order to know what your skin’s pH level is, you could take a simple test that is available at most dermatologists.

If you do not suffer from any skin conditions, then your skin is most likely at a pH level of 5.5.

If you tend to have oily skin, then its pH level should be below 5.5.

If you usually have very dry skin, then its pH level should be above 5.5.

Use the right products

The most basic of all products – the facial cleanser, plays one of the biggest roles in ensuring pH balance of your skin. Find a cleanser that has the closest pH value to your skin type, because a cleanser that has a close pH value to your skin will not mess up your pH balance.

Apart from your facial cleanser, be sure to check the other products that you might use on your skin.

Eat right

As much as we’ve stressed this, it is worth mentioning again!

Eating right contributes significantly to your body’s pH level (that’s right, your body has a general pH level too!), which directly translates onto your skin’s pH Balance as well.

Here’s a rough chart to tell you what to eat and what not to eat. Please bear in mind your skin type and thus pH balance, though.

Some of us have to go through the trouble of always having an oil-blotting sheet in our purse because we have oily skin. Do not fret, here are some tips that might help get rid of that oily skin.

1. Cleansers

Avoid buying cleansers that contain sulphates which will cause immediate tightness after cleansing as this will cause your skin to produce more oil than necessary. Instead opt for an “Oil-Control Cleanser” that is formulated with activated charcoal that will help to purify the skin without drying it out. Also, do not wash your face with hot water but light steaming once a week accompanied by your evening regimen should be good.

2. Exfoliation

Exfoliate your skin mildly. Scrubbing your face too often or too long might cause more oil production. Do it once or twice a week and lightly scrub the face. Buying a facial scrub that contains Salicylic Acid will help to gently exfoliate and also reduce acne.

3. Toner

Use a toner that is acetone and alcohol free. If the toner contains alcohol, it will send messages to the oil glands to produce more oil. It would be best to avoid them.

4. Moisturiser

Instead of using a moisturiser, use a hydrating serum. If your skin is very oily, use the serum only at night. But if your skin is somewhat oily, you can use the serum once in the morning and once at night. A hydrating serum does not only help to hydrate the skin, it also helps to keep skin glowing and smooth. Only use a hydrating moisturiser when skin feels dry after using the serum twice per day.

5. Sunscreen

Never forget to protect your skin from the sun. End off your skin care routine with a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more and your skin will thank you for it! Do not use a moisturiser containing sunscreen. Your sunscreen should just be purely a sunscreen.

There is a lot of nutrients packed in a tomato that you can just grab at the supermarket that benefits your skin! They contain vitamins that your skin need including:

– Vitamin A

– Vitamin C

– Vitamin K

– Antioxidants, lycopene

-Dietary fibre

– Iron

– Calcium

– Zinc

 

1. Shrink Your Pores

Tomatoes are an astringent which helps to reduce the size of your pores to make them smaller.

Mix a tablespoon of tomato juice with 3-4 drops of lime juice. Use a cotton ball and spread gently all over your face in circular motion. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and rinse off with cold water.

2. Cure Acne

Vitamins A and C are regularly found in acne medication and these two vitamins are also available in tomatoes.

If you have mild acne, cut the tomato in half and rub it all over your face. For severe acne, you can use fresh tomato puree as a mask. Take one tomato and make it into a puree and rub on face. Leave it on for an hour. Rinse and apply moisturizer. Do it on a regular basis.

3. Remove Blackheads

Tomato works as a repellent substance and reduce blackheads while the avocado oil has antiseptic and moisturizing effect. When these two products are combined together, it makes a very good skin care product.

Mash tomatoes and add avocado oil or mash up some avocado as well, mix together and apply it on face. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and wash with warm water.

4, Reduce Inflammation

Tomato cool the skin and neutralize the skin surface, while the yogurt gives the skin a much needed protein, making it more soft and supple.

Add half a tomato and mash it with 2 tablespoon of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture on face, neck, hand and feet for 20 minutes and wash off.
