If you’re like some of our clients who first walked through our doors, you might have the misunderstanding that hydration begins only when you’re slapping on moisturizer. Not true! Hydration should really be a part of every step of your skincare routine, including the first: pre-cleansing. Layering is a concept that’s been around for a while now, but many articles we’ve come across talk only about layering on moisturizers… which still focuses on the final step of your skincare ritual. And there’s so much more than that! Today, let’s talk about layering hydration the right way.

1. Layering hydration begins from cleansing

Your cleanser (and pre-cleanser) should help remove makeup and impurities while still injecting your skin with moisture. Love the squeaky-clean feel of your skin after cleansing? That’s not what you should be gunning for! Instead, your face should feel soft and supple after the first wash, as the former is a sure sign of skin that has been stripped of moisture. Look for pre-cleansers and cleansers that contain hydrating ingredients for a revitalizing and hydrating wash.

Ingredient Tip-off: Sodium Hyaluronate, coconut extracts, orchid extracts, aloe vera, cucumber.

2. Hydration continues every step after

Dehydrated skin means it’s more prone to build up and any moisture you want to flush your skin with simply won’t get through. Make room for it! Use a gentle exfoliator with natural plant enzymes and aloe extracts to soften dead skin cells while hydrating the skin.

You then follow with your essences, moisturisers, serums and toners… But wait, in which order? There IS a science to follow if you really want to be layering right.

3. The Golden Rule: Layer from lightest to heaviest

This applies to any skincare routine. After you cleanse and exfoliate, you want to work your way through the thinnest products first and build up to the thickest. Products that are less viscous have smaller particles, thus penetrating more easily and deeply into your skin. These mean your toners, essences and serums, followed by your moisturisers. Look for toners that contain hydrating ingredients like natural rose and jojoba oils and that you can use for a quick spritz throughout the day. Find serums that have hydration powerhouses like sodium hyaluronate and aloe vera to quench thirsty skin. Finally, end with moisturizers that also contain hydrating properties and hyaluronic acid to seal all that water within.

4. A Final Tip: Oils don’t moisturise; they seal

It’s an understandable misconception to think that heavier products are necessary to help dehydrated skin, but it is still a misconception. The truth is, when your skin needs water and you’re giving it oil instead, it’s going to become even more desert-like. Why? Oil keeps water out (or in, if you’d been diligent in your hydrating cleansing regime). Imagine adding heavy cream to a dry sponge – it wouldn’t be absorbed, right? Again, many clients have come to understand that dehydrated skin lacks water – not oil. If you are the kind who suffers from seemingly dry skin yet with overactive sebum glands, it’s a sure sign of dehydration but read more about that here.

A final note…

Layering tops up on moisture every single step so it’s a progressive journey for your skin. Instead of cleansing and toning methods that strip your face down into nothing before dumping a whole lot of moisturiser on again, taking it through a healthier exchange of removing oil while replenishing water helps achieve a balanced skin pH. Moreover, this helps to lock in moisture better!

4 Ways to Ensure Your Body & Skin Are Hydrated

#SkinHacks: Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin – 3 Quick Tips

To fight wrinkles and other signs of aging, you need to keep your skin protected and hydrated. Though you can’t turn back hands of time, these anti-aging skincare tips will help keep your skin smoother and younger looking.

Eat For Skin Health

What we eat has a huge impact on how we look, especially when it comes to achieving that much-coveted youthful glow. Get plenty of healthy fats – omega-3s and monounsaturated fat – which help regenerate skin at the cellular level, improve texture and tone and help ensure skin looks supple. Get these smart fats from fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut, sardines), avocado, olives and olive oil.

Choose food that are rich in lutein – a carotenoid that may help protect your skin from the inside out. The best sources of lutein are egg yolks, leafy dark green veggies and fresh corn. Some studies have found that lutein may also protect skin from UV damage.

Foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, broccoli, leafy greens (kale, spinach) and tomatoes are also great for your skin. We need antioxidants to help protect the skin from free-radical damage (rough texture, wrinkles, sun spots). Vitamin E is another must for skin health. Add vegetable oils, wheat germ, nuts, seeds and olives to your diet for healthy, glowing skin.

Stay Hydrated

If you want skin to look younger and more supple, drinking enough water is a must. “Dehydrated skin looks wrinkled and rough,” Spano says. Aim for eight glasses a day, which will also help you lose weight, aid digestion, improve your energy and concentration and flush toxins from your body. Keep a reusable bottle in your purse for easy, on-the-go sipping.

Anti-Aging Skin Care

Cleanse: Gently wash your face both morning and night, but steer clear of cleansers that have high alcohol content and other drying agents. Try Porcelain’s Soothe Hydro Cleanser (from Soothe range) for herbal extracts and mild cleansing.

Exfoliate: Exfoliate your skin weekly with a gentle facial exfoliator, which will get rid of dead skin cells and keep skin smooth, healthy and fresh.  Try Porcelain’s Revive, Natural Skin Refiner. It contains Natural Enzymes which help soften dead skin cells, and gently rub it away without agitating your skin.

Moisturize: Apply moisturizer over your entire face and neck twice a day. Dry, aging skin loses its elasticity, which is when wrinkles start to form. Try Porcelain’s Balance Essence. It contains 50% Sodium Hyaluronate which studies have proven that each droplet is a thousand times more absorbent than water. Meanwhile, Balance Essence helps lock in collagen and elastin which eventually slows down aging process.

Protect Your Skin

No matter your age, you need to protect your skin from the sun. Not only can sun exposure lead to skin cancer, it will also cause dryness, sun spots, wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. Always use a moisturizer, sunscreen and cosmetics that contain SPF 15 or higher. If you spend a lot of time in the sun each day, wear both sunglasses and a hat.

For this week, Porcelain will introduce you to the easy but effective home skin care world. Make your own DIY pack easily and conveniently at home.

Honey Banana Pack – Give hydration to your dry skin!

Did you know that a banana not only taste excellent but also good for your skin? It soothes the skin and helps circulation while nourishing skin with antioxidants and other minerals. Banana has no known side effects to skin thus it is effective for sensitive, acne-prone skin. Potassium in a banana can help heal blemishes faster. And also banana will make your skin softer and hydrated. Perfect for dry skin! Don’t forget that a banana is good for your anti-aging. If you are worried about getting fat, give bananas to your skin!

–          Ingredients : banana 1, honey 1 tsp, yogurt 2 tsp, flour 1 tsp

Mash the banana and mix all the ingredients together! Then apply it to your face with a brush. After 10-15 minutes, gently wash off your face with warm water. Banana and honey will give you moisture to your skin! Feel moist-full skin. Did you find it effective? Also you can make use of banana peels. Grab banana peels and rub the insides of banana peels onto your skin. Banana skins have a lot of nutrients which work the same as bananas!

Lemon juice Facial Wash – Perfect way to brighten and make your skin elastic!

One of the cheapest and most easily accessible things for healthier skin is definitely lemon! It is good for acne, brown spots, skin whitening, and pigmentation. It works well on oily skin and lightens the skin too. Acid in lemon acts as an antiseptic and kills the bacteria. Also, if you are worried about blackheads, lemon is also a good choice!

–          Ingredients : only lemon

Cut lemon in half and squeeze the lemon. With the juice of lemon, massage your face for 2-3 minutes avoiding your delicate eyes. Carefully wash your face to remove lemon! Don’t forget to give enough moisture. Acid in lemon can steal your moisture. Lemon wash twice a week and you will get white spotless skin.

Aloe Pack – Let’s give our exhausted skin a rest.

Let our skin rest from the intensive Sun! Aloe is the best thing to enhance moisture and soothe skin. Do you know that Aloe was called ‘plant of immortality’ in ancient Egypt? Since then Aloe has been used as remedy for sun burn and inflammation. However if you think that this is all for Aloe, you misunderstood Aloe! Aloe is also good for acne and cell rejuvenation.

–          Ingredients : Raw aloe

Peel off raw aloe and cut the inner part into thin slices. Put it on your face and leave it for 10-15 minutes. After moist from aloe penetrate into your skin, remove it! Or if you are a skin-conscious person, scrape the aloe and mix it with 1tsp honey and 1tsp adlay powder and put it on your clean face. Rinse off your face 10-15 minutes later and your skin is ready to go out for lovely dinner date!

Egg white and honey pack – Exfoliate, balance, tighten pore and make your skin glow!

Egg white is not only used in making meringues but also used as a base for a lot of skin masks. Egg white is known as an instant face lifter and pore tightner. You have to be aware that these effects are only temporary and smell can be quite nasty before the whites of eggs dries up.

–          Ingredients : white of an egg, milk 1tsp, honey 1tsp

Put all the things in blender and blend it until the foam forms. What a rhyme! Do not try to mix it on your own, you will go muscular. After cleansing your face, put the mixture on your skin. When the mixture dries up after 5-7 minutes, get ready to feel the difference? Wash it off! You will be surprised to have glowing skin. Don’t forget to do this pack regularly about 3 times a week! Besides mixing egg whites with honey, you can add avocados, milk, oatmeal and other natural pleasures according to your skin conditions.

Almond Oil Therapy – Effective cleanser for your delicate skin!

Did you know that almond oil was used for skin care since Roman Empire? Let’s make porcelain skin with almond! We can take advantage of almonds better in liquid form than in solid form. Almond oil is rich in vitamin A, D, E and has magnesium and calcium. In addition it is famous for its emollient effect. It helps reduce skin irritation, delays aging process, smoothes the skin and improves the skin tone! Let’s try.

–          Ingredients : piece of cotton, almond oil

Just dip a piece of cotton in almond oil and wipe off your face with it! How easy it is! All the nutrients will go into your skin smoothly and give your dry skin nutrients.

Having dry lips in this blazing hot weather? Here’s 3 easy peasy steps to keep your lips looking well-hydrated for a pretty, kissable pout!

1. Exfoliate the skin on your lips – With a pinch of sugar in the palm of your hand, drop a few droplets of water on the sugar and mix. Next, use your index finger to scoop the mixture and gently exfoliate your lips in small circular motions. Use warm water to rinse off after. Alternatively, you may dip a clean face towel or wash cloth into a cup of warm water and place it over your lips for 30 seconds to soften the skin, before using the bristles of your toothbrush in small circular motions to remove the dead skin.

2. Apply lipbalm or Vaseline – Now that your lips look and feel  much smoother, it is time to protect your lips by applying a moisturing lip balm or with Vaseline. These helps to moisturise your lips, prolonging the effects of having dry, chapped lips. Additionally, for those with SPF protection, the lip balm helps to prevent sun damage.

3. Apply lip gloss – Apply a lip gloss shade that looks good on your face. The shiny appearance of the lip gloss helps to enhance the appearance of your lips, while giving you the perfect look with kissable lips!

fingers-touching-lips

However, do remember that if you want to have nice, pretty lips, you should abstain from doing the following:

1. Never touch your lips, or peel the dry skin on your lips with your dirty fingers – bacteria is easily transferable and can enter the tiny cracks on the lips.

2. Never lick your lips – while it may feel good on your lips to sooth the dry, cracked skin, this act supposedly makes your problem much worse as enzymes that help to clean your mouth and digest food are too harsh for your lips. Furthermore, saliva evaporates quickly, and this actually makes your lips drier than before.

What you can do to help yourself, is to drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated as the reason why dry lips are cracked or scaly is due to dehydration.

Now pucker up and have a great weekend ahead everybody!
