It’s so cliched to kickstart something new whenever January and the New Year roll around. This time, we’re reinventing the wheel (okay, exaggerating here). This December, we’re kickstarting 2019 with a brand-new series with WearOhWhere.com — the Origins series. In this series, we uncover people’s stories once more, focusing on their heritage, roots and then their futures. We explore how they look back on their pasts, how they use their histories to inspire their todays and tomorrows, how their origins define who they are and will be.

Here’s Origins defined — the Porcelain way:

Origin
{or·i·gin} /noun/
The point at which something begins its existence

[1] The inception of fresh concepts that push traditional boundaries and create paradigm shifts in beauty and skincare. The birthplace of the trends of tomorrow.
[2] Also a celebration of You – you who came, loved and stayed

These remain the inspiration behind our latest collaboration with WOW. Soon, we’ll be unearthing three ladies’ versions of their backgrounds and how they play an integral part in influencing their futures.

Last week, we launched the new Origins series with Kelly Latimer — TV host, vocal talent, fitness enthusiast, mother of a very beautiful Sienna… but my personal favourite? SAF-enlister.

Here’s Kelly defined — the Latimer way:

On being British:

“I like tea. I think my frankness is quite British. I’m quite straight to the point and quite curt… if you asked me for my opinion, I will give you my opinion. Everyone says what they think there whether you like it or not, whether you can take it or not. If you are willing to dish it, you’re going to have to be willing to take it as well.”

On being Singaporean:

“I like to feed people! I inherited my mother’s Asian hospitality. If you come to my house, you’ll never be hungry.”

And if you’re not yet up to date with our #BareWithMe and #DearPauline series, you need to catch up. Pronto.

Stay True,

As we progress from our mid-20s into our 30s, some of us may start to notice the subtle signs of ageing. Do not fret, as we can put our best face forward with these five simple preventive measures – you will be left with glowing, healthy skin!

1.    Sunscreen

Prevent signs of ageing with sunscreen!

Summer is a year-long affair for Singaporeans. Sunscreen is a definite essential in our skincare routine, as it is a key weapon against the tropical climate.

You need sun protection during daytime, no matter if the sky is overcast or you are staying indoors. The sun’s rays can pass through clouds and windows, so you are always exposed. Wearing sunscreen daily is the first and most important step to safeguard against the harmful UV radiation.

When choosing a sunscreen, be sure to choose one that has at least SPF 30 for daily use. Do remember to apply moisturizing lip balm with sunscreen too, to keep sun-chapped lips at bay.

2.    Hydration

Prevent signs of ageing by staying hydrated!

As we have been told since a tender age, drinking sufficient water daily is vital for overall good health.

Not only does it bring an array of health benefits, it has inherent skincare benefits by effectively locking moisture into your skin.

Drinking water helps to improve the skin’s appearance, by giving it a radiant, healthy glow. Especially during the upcoming summer months, hydration can prevent signs of dehydration like dry skin and wrinkles, which makes the skin look aged. Toss away your soft drink cans – guzzle water and your skin will thank you for it!

3.    Moisturizing

Prevent signs of ageing by moisturizing!

One of the best defences for ageing should be a quality anti-ageing moisturizer that helps your skin build and retain a natural moisture barrier.

Besides protecting your skin from external pollutants, it keeps the skin hydrated and provides high levels of nutrients that replenish the skin. Leaving the skin looking rejuvenated, it reduces the occurrence of fine lines and wrinkles.

Even if you have oily skin or breakouts, you can opt for lightweight, oil-free moisturizers for daily use that do not leave the skin feeling sticky. Pat it gently on your skin to effectively seal in the moisture and avoid tugging the skin while doing so.

4.    Whole Grains

Prevent signs of ageing by eating whole grains!

Healthy food choices play an important role in improving your complexion and can work wonders on your skin. Instead of your daily breakfast of white bread, opt for whole wheat bread as an alternative, to kick-start your morning.

Whole grains are unprocessed alternatives, which are good sources of B-vitamins and fibre. These essential vitamins moisturize the skin, keeping them from being dry and scaly.

Some whole grains like buckwheat contain antioxidants, which combat inflammation-related skin damage. Replacing your refined-flour pancakes with buckwheat pancakes help reduce acne, while nourishing your skin. Who says eating healthily entails giving up your favourite food?

5.    Exercise

Prevent signs of ageing by exercising!

Working up a good sweat offers a number of benefits for your skin and should be a vital part of any skin care regimen.

Breaking out in sweat boosts oxygen and blood flow to the skin, carrying nutrients that improve skin’s radiance by stimulating the collagen production. Sweat purges the skin of its toxins that clog pores and cause acne, resulting in a clear complexion with a natural pink flush. Notice how your skin has a natural healthy glow after each workout session?

When exercising, your skin starts to produce more of its natural oils that enhance the suppleness of your skin. Make exercise your secret skin care ingredient for a younger, healthier and smoother complexion. The next time you find yourself deliberating whether or not to head to the gym, don’t forget to factor vibrant complexion in as an added bonus to a better you!

Milia seeds are a skin condition that can happen to anyone at any time in life. They are most often seen in newborns and can be expected to rapidly disappear in these cases. The biggest problem with milia occurring in infancy is panicky parents, who do not know how harmless and temporary it is. Milia may not be so temporary when adults get it. In fact, these unsightly blister-like bumps can sometimes be permanent without intervention.

Milia visibly manifest in tiny blister-like protrusions on the skin. This can occur in anyone, regardless of age, sex, or race. Those on infants usually disappear over a brief period, but on adults, can be a long-term cosmetic problem. This condition is not dangerous, and it is officially unknown if there is a relationship to another underlying condition. Milia is one of the most misunderstood of all health conditions, but in itself, appears harmless by all reports.

Milia Seeds - Understanding Causes & Treatment

Causes of Milia Seeds

The truth is that no one knows the causes with certainty. It is widely believed that this condition is due to an exfoliation problem when tiny flakes of dead skin clog the pores. Our research indicates that this is likely only half of the equation. The other half is an excess of cholesterol in the skin, where the body frequently deposits its excess cholesterol. This, in turn, leads us to a third contributing factor, which is sunlight deficiency. A body removes excess cholesterol in the skin through sunlight, which helps converts it into vitamin D3.

Here are some of the other causes of Milia Seeds:

  • trauma to sweat ducts
  • radiotherapy (radiation)
  • sunscreens
  • topical corticosteroid use
  • genodermatoses (genetics)

For those who want to care for them themselves, we recommend:

  • Take frequent showers
  • Exfoliate the skin
  • Supplementation with niacin is the single most effective treatment for some sufferers
  • Avoid heavy facial cosmetics
  • Get moderate sunlight exposure frequently
  • Reduce high cholesterol foods
  • Supplement with biotin, because many sufferers find that biotin supplementation alone cures their milia
  • CoQ10 is produced by the body during intense exercise and is found in meat and fish.  The body uses it to emulsify oils and increase energy.  Emulsifiers make oils water-soluble (like soap), which assists in its removal, thus reducing milia.

Treatment for Milia Seeds:

Milia Seeds: Extractions are the key treatment

Extractions are the key to porcelain skin.

Director Aesthetician, Jenny Teng, who has had over 17 years of experience as an aesthetician, explains.

Throughout my career, there is one core finding in my approach to effective skincare treatment. That is the thorough deep cleansing of the skin using specific extraction techniques for different skin problems. It has been my mantra and Porcelain’s mantra. With proper deep cleansing, nutrients from the products we use can penetrate much easily into the dermis and that is what makes Porcelain facials different.”

Porcelain’s Director Aesthetician has been known widely for her skills to remove milia seed through extractions. Find out more about Precision Facial and how our Director can help your skin.

Blog Reviews by Clients:

  • Despite the red spots, I was happy. No, ECSTATIC. My skin was not only silky smooth but BABY SOFT! Every painful moment through the extraction that I tried to trace back, was well compensated with the pure glow and light that I was looking myself in the mirror.” – Grace Lim
  • Jenny then starts working and she left no pore untouched. Every single one of my pores was pulled, poked, squeezed and some, multiple times. I held a hand-mirror as she worked; explaining her meticulous process at the same time. I looked on with an amalgamated mix of excitement, surprise and embarrassment. Out of my pores came deep-seated milia seeds (oilseeds) and gunk produced by my over-active sebaceous glands.” – Nicolas Travis
  • “When the redness subsided, my skin was smooth as a baby’s bottom. Well, maybe not that smooth but smoother and clearer than it had been in years. Some of the pigmentation was also considerably lighter and I was loving my new glowing Photoshopped complexion. In fact, I’m so sold that I’m willing to go through the entire ordeal all over again.” – Mother Inc, Daphne Ling

Eat it. Drink it. Rub it on your skin. Whichever way you slice it, the grapefruit has healing properties that can improve one’s skin quality.

With that said, grapefruit has a distinctive tanginess that may not suit everyone’s taste buds. But a way to attaining great complexion is to add it into your diet. The tangy fruit is well reported to boost one’s health by flushing toxins from the body, thereby having a compounding positive effects on one’s skin!

If you do not appreciate its unique taste, do not fret, as you can incorporate the fruit into your skincare regime instead. The exotic fruit has been gaining popularity as it is increasingly touted as a beauty must-have and the secret to a beautiful complexion. An excellent source of vitamin C, it’s one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, vitamins A and E and minerals.

Here are five reasons why you should start applying grapefruit onto your skin:

1. Grapefruit is Great for Anti-ageing

Vitamins found in grapefruit stimulate collagen production, which enhances the plumpness and suppleness of your skin. Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, your skin will appear fuller and more youthful. Especially beneficial for aging skin, grapefruit is known to improve skin’s elasticity and reverse the signs of aging.

2.  It Evens Out Skintones

Rich in anti-oxidants such as retinol, grapefruit renews damaged skin and treats skin pigmentation. Essentially, it evens out your skin tone, leaving you fresh-faced with a clear and bright complexion. Aside from rejuvenating your skin, it makes the skin softer and firmer to the touch.

3. It Even Fights Free Radicals

Grapefruit contains vital minerals, such as potassium, which helps smoothen wrinkles and act as protective shields against harmful UV rays.

High in water content, grapefruit hydrates your skin by creating a moisture barrier. This barrier makes the skin more resistant to environmental pollutants, as well as free-radical damage from sun exposure. As summer approaches, make grapefruit the snack of your choice to protect your skin.

4. It Also Reduces Acne

If you struggle with acne, grapefruit can help by gently controlling outbreaks. Due to its exfoliating nature, it is suitable for oily and acne-prone skin. Healing the skin naturally with its antibacterial properties, grapefruit can aid you in your quest in fighting acne.

5. It’s A Real Smooth Talker
